Thanks for your insightful post, Jonathan. Your suggestion to eat less meat is a good one. There’s another easy way to accomplish that goal that doesn’t require much consumer behavior change: have the meat companies blend their beef with plant-based proteins, substantially lowering the footprint of the beef product while keeping the same flavor/texture. For example, see the work of The Better Meat Co (www.BetterMeat.co), an ingredients company that enables meat producers to do just that. (Disclosure: I’m CEO of the company.)

Additionally, you mention uncertainty about what the cells in cultivated meat production will consume. You’re right that cultivated meat production will likely still take more resources than many plant-based foods do, but considering that meat demand is only rising (both in the US and around the world), it seems like any alternative methods of producing meat without having to raise animals are promising avenues to explore.
