Some Meat Companies Are All About that (Plant) Base. Others, Not So Much

Unilever this week acquired The Vegetarian Butcher

Some meat companies are all about that (plant) base, partnering with cultured and plant-based protein companies. Others, not so much. NPR reports this week on Big Beef’s big beef with its newly successful competitors.

The same is so in the dairy industry, as I wrote about in a Washington Post op-ed which was just chosen by the Post this week as one of its favorite op-eds of 2018! (Others selected include John McCain, Laura Bush, and Jamal Khashoggi…) And just this week, the Ninth Circuit upheld the dismissal of a suit arguing almond milk should be labeled “imitation milk.”

One major food company, though, is going all in. My hat’s off to Unilever this week for acquiring The Vegetarian Butcher. These types of acquisitions are the stuff of dreams for venture capitalists investing in the plant-based space. But one guy was the real pioneer in this field, and he’s profiled in Bloomberg this week. Check it out.

Finally, if you’re a circus that’s using wild animals and you hear that bell tolling, wonder not: it tolls for thee. New Jersey this week became the first state to ban such inhumanity to wildlife.

Have a nice weekend,
Paul

P.S. Video of the week: Some folks are just showoffs.
