Dawkins makes a Shawshank-style run for his freedom.

The big news this week was a new report showing that humanity’s addiction to animal agribusiness has helped create a situation where now 96% of all mammals on the planet (by weight) are either humans or the animals we own, with only 4% being free-living mammals.

How can we reduce our reliance on the raising and slaughtering of animals for food? Sure, individual consumer action is important, but perhaps not as important as fostering new technology, I argue in a new piece about climate and meat this week.

One such technology is clean meat, which a Virginia Pilot columnist this week said “completely changes the game for animals.” (And check out VICE’s video this week about it, too.) In fact, just today the Japanese government announced its own investment in clean meat!

Finally, the feel-good story of the week goes to Dawkins the monkey, who endured experimentation and in an almost Shawshank Redemption manner escaped his imprisonment to find his way to a sanctuary.
